A chance to play

I started this night in early 2015 to give people the opportunity to get together and have fun playing and singing some great tunes. More often than not, people start playing an instrument but then don’t have the chance or the confidence to become part of something bigger. This is a real shame – part of the joy of playing an instrument is meeting other like minded people.

ALL standards are welcome at our session. It doesn’t matter if you have been playing for years or have just learnt your first three chords.

Some people just come along and sing which is fantastic.  So if you are in a couple and only one of you plays an instrument you can both still get involved if you wish! The more the merrier.

The session is very relaxed. I hand out lyric and chord sheets which you can keep. We have a quick chat about how to play the song and then have a go. Sometimes it goes well, sometimes not, but we move on to the next one regardless. It isn’t a rehearsal or a lesson – you can practise the tunes at home if you wish, but there is no obligation.

We generally get through around 15 tunes a session and I always try to include something we haven’t played before.

We play charity gigs and open mic nights every now and then (look through the feed on the main page) which can be motivating for some, but you are not obliged to play if you feel that is a bit scary!

It is REALLY IMPORTANT to realise that nobody is going to notice if you make a mistake. Or if they do they won’t care. Because we are all making mistakes throughout the night. That doesn’t mean we sound bad – hopefully enough people are on the right chord or singing the right note to cover up any problems! And when we totally lose the plot as can happen we just laugh about it anyway.

So don’t use your own ability (or perceived lack of) as being an excuse to not come along. Just give it a try and if it’s not for you you haven’t lost anything.

Feel free to get in touch with me if you need a bit of reassurance.

To sum up, what I hope is that you will come down and have a good time, make some new friends and maybe improve your musical skills as a bonus.
